Shonenko exposes the remarkable story of Taiwanese child laborers (shonenko) during the World War II. Boys 12 to 14 were sent to Japan to work on the Japanese naval arsenals and to build fighter planes. They left their families, homelands, and childhood with the promise of receiving an education in Japan. But their dreams were shattered – first by the war and again by cruel post-war politics in Taiwan, Japan, and China.

Watched it at the Davis screening last night... very interesting and well done! I agree with the director that a lot of us young generations do not know much about our own country's history and am very happy that one of the reasons that she did this documentary was the hopes to inspire people to find out more about Taiwan's past.
